The Space Between Us
By Randy McKellar
There is a space between us that isn’t there,
A space that springs from things we share.
We are the same, you and I,
In ways unseen with our eye.
We are the same, you and I,
In the ways that we care.
The things that we see are the clothes that we wear,
That cloak us with otherness against the chill of our fear.
We see color and gender, we see roles, we see age,
We see politics, religion, and feel righteous rage.
But beneath this facade in the art of the war,
We are the same, you and I, and we’ve come so far.
We seek a world full of love, a world full of joy,
A world without pretense, a world without ploy.
We seek abundance and purpose,
We need belonging, respect,
We seek one another,
We need only accept.
Each of us walks our own path in this life,
We feel isolation, we experience strife.
Our pain prompts our fear, our anger, the blame
That blocks our awareness that we are all the same.
If we let go of our anger, our fear, and the hate,
If we no longer accept that war is our fate.
If I pause for a moment, put myself in your shoes,
I’ll begin to accept the paths that you choose.
We can then walk together, side by side, in the sun,
We can share our perspectives, find the ways we are one.
There are problems to solve, things we can build,
As soon as we see we are in the same guild.
There is a space between us that isn’t there,
A space that springs from things we share.
We are the same, you and I,
In ways we can’t see
When all that we use
Is our mind and our eye.
