The Parable of the Sower

The Parable of the Sower
A Book Review by
Larry Duggins

As I was searching for an audio book to ride with me on my annual summer trek to Asheville, I stumbled upon The Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler. I was hoping to find something written by someone who has a different life view than my own and Ms Butler was an African-American author winner of a Hugo, a Nebula award and a MacArthur Fellowship. Pretty strong credentials.

Story Sharing in Portland

Story Sharing in Portland
by Eric Conklin

A few weeks ago, an evening of story sharing was held at the United Methodist Church’s Peace House in the Irvington neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. There were about 75 people present from a variety of experiences and traditions, all of whom came curious to hear stories and make connections with others. I emceed the event, which was fun and a little nerve racking! There was an opportunity to talk about each of the sponsors for the event, where Missional Wisdom was one of 3. This story sharing event has been an ongoing project of the Parish Collective, a network of neighborhood expressions of micro-faith communities, inspiringly born out of the work of Paul Sparks, Tim Sorens, and Dwight Friesen.

As Andrea mentioned in the devotional above, today marks the one year anniversary of Missional Wisdom Foundation’s Wisdom for the Way publication. We have been working hard - alongside many of you - to continue our mission of experimenting with and teaching about alternative forms of Christian community, and we have a number of new programs nearing completion.

Happy Tents

Happy Tents

by Meredith Ball

Happy Tents is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families today.  For the past few years we have been working to help families see every day life from a different view…God’s view.  When we look at our families through God’s eyes, we see God at work.

We believe that through God’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we can see a glimpse of eternal life within the moments in our family life.  Each week, we write a devotional on our website to capture these moments from our tent in hopes that it inspires you to see God at work in your tent.  Sometimes God’s work is funny, sometimes it is sad and sometimes is stretches us into new relationships or understandings.  Though we do not know where God will show up in our family, we constantly know that God is at work in each of our lives individually and together.

Missional Imagination in Action

Missional Imagination in Action

by Rachel Wells

Missional Imagination is one of the most popular, most talked about courses in Missional Wisdom Foundation's online learning program, Launch & Lead. In this course, students are encouraged to actively look for places in which God is already breaking into the world, and ways in which they can join in and continue that work. It is my privilege to be married to the instructor of the course, the ever-eloquent Dr. Bret Wells, so I hear about Missional Imagination often. Bret and I also talk with our children daily about finding ways to see Jesus at work and in others.

Reclaiming Wonder

Reclaiming Wonder

Though I was raised in a devout Christian home, our faith tradition did not really practice or observe Advent. Which is why, as a child - and even into adulthood - I did not understand much about this season of anticipation. My exposure was pretty much limited to the calendar that hung in our living room, with a cookie for each of us kids nestled in the numbered pocket for each day of December.

f only the New Testament could be prefaced by:

Spotlight: The Julian Way

On April 30th, Justin and Lisa Hancock’s emerging ministry, The Julian Way, held a gathering of twenty people who belong to and advocate for the disabled community. The purpose of the gathering was to listen, dream, and discuss the design of a universally accessible house, which the Hancocks and Missional Wisdom Foundation hope to build together.
